Project overview
Fonts designed
Lorenzo Type is four families from one desk, seventeen styles in all, each free: Lorenzo Hand, traced letter by letter from the writing on an order sheet; Lorenzo Longhand, the pen-stroke hand in Ballpoint, Graphite and Inkwell; Lorenzo Typewriter, serif and sans in Thin, Light, Regular and Bold; Lorenzo Meadow, Script, Stitched, Sans Light and Regular, and Ornaments.
The home page is the order sheet itself, on gingham: date, name, Rural Route 2 Box 17, Low Moon KS, and the four families as its lines. Lorenzo Hand is a blue-ballpoint cursive lifted from two pages written by hand, an order sheet filled in for Far Light Gardens and the captions pencilled beside a pressed spurge; every word on those pages is in the font whole, as the hand wrote it. The mailroom files the paintings, the writing and the muses, and the whole site can be read on the meadow paper instead.

The families
Lorenzo Hand, Longhand, Typewriter and Meadow, each served from the site's own files; the specimen here uses those files.

Design note
The site, page by page
Type drawn and traced from Lorenzo Scardicchio's own hand, served from the mailroom on paper photographed from his desk. The home page is the order sheet on gingham; each family has its specimen page with a tester, every glyph and the files to take.

Lorenzo Hand
A blue-ballpoint cursive, lifted from two pages written by hand: an order sheet filled in for Far Light Gardens, and the captions pencilled beside a pressed spurge. Every word on those pages is in the font whole, as the hand wrote it, and the ligature sets the scan's own word, joins, slips and all. Three weights: Regular is the order sheet's ballpoint set a little heavier than it wrote; As Written is that ballpoint at the weight it has on the page; Fine is the thinner pen of the captions.

Design note
Drawn as the pen made it
Every word and letter is redrawn from its pen strokes, not traced around the scan's ink: each glyph's ink is reduced to its centre lines, joined into strokes wherever the hand went straight on through a crossing, smoothed by a spline that may stray only a tenth of a pen width from the ink's own middle, and drawn back as discs at the pen's width. A ballpoint pools where it pauses, so in Regular each knob is put back in the ink's own shape.
“Every word on those pages is in the font whole, as the hand wrote it.”
