The Work Compounds

Small acts of practice can become a lifetime of preparation.

IV / 01Cristiano Ronaldo

He was 12 years old, alone, 535 miles from home, and the other boys mocked his island accent.

In their book on Ronaldo and Messi, Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg describe what Cristiano Ronaldo did next at the Sporting academy.

He was barred from the gym, because the academy did not let young players lift. So he snuck out at night to do it anyway. He got caught and was given detention.

Then he started using buckets of water in the shower as weights. When the buckets were taken away, he strapped weights to his ankles. When the ball was taken away to stop him overdoing it, he juggled oranges from a fruit bowl.

That is the boy. The man arrived in Houston on Tuesday, 41 years old. Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0. He scored in the 6th minute off a Joao Cancelo cross, then buried a Bruno Fernandes through ball before halftime.

That second goal was his 10th career World Cup goal, passing Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament. With that brace, he became the first footballer in history, man or woman, to score in 6 different World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.

Messi has played in 6 World Cups too. He did not score in 2010. Ronaldo found the net in all 6. Ferguson signed him from Sporting in 2003 at 18, for around £12 million.

The talent was always there.

The buckets and the oranges and the ankle weights are the hard work that compounded for 30 years.
